BAESHAN
Ahmad Muhammad Saleh Baeshan & Company was established in 1887. The family moved to Jeddah from the Hadhramaut in Yemen around 1790 because the father of Abdullah had left his wealth, a garden in Rabat at Wadi Du'an, for the benefit of a Mosque he had built. This resulted in the children having to earn their own living using their own skills and resources.
Ali bin Abdullah began by importing rice, white flour, and other goods from India. He had a 50% share in a sailing Dhow with one Muhammad Jawhar whose family has become extinct. The Dhows, during those times, made two voyages each year and there were three main fleets in Jeddah, one sailing to Bombay and Calicut, one to Malabar, and one t Basrah for dates and barley. Ali prospered and built a compound for his own family in 1849. He died when he was 94 years old.
Sheikh Ahmad Muhammad Saleh Baeshan, whose daughter and son-in-law have taken over the business, was the pioneer of commercial history in Jeddah.
The name of Baeshan is famous for the import and distribution of tea throughout the region.
